Travel to the Conference

About Montgomery

Montgomery is an unrivaled historic and Civil Rights destination— A world changing city defining its future by embracing its diverse community and celebrating its rich and unique cultural experiences.

Incorporated in 1819, Montgomery has a long and intriguing history. Once home to the First White House of the Confederacy, Montgomery grew to become the center of the Civil Rights Movement, notably the Montgomery Bus Boycotts.

Prior to European colonization, the east bank of the Alabama River was inhabited by the Alibamu tribe of Native Americans.

In the post-World War II era, returning African-American veterans were among those who became active in pushing to regain their civil rights in the South: to be allowed to vote and participate in politics, to freely use public places, to end segregation.

A 13-month protest that began on December 5, 1955, after Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white man on the bus. The boycott was led by Martin Luther King, Jr., president of the Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA). The boycott ended with a 1956 Supreme Court decision that declared Montgomery's segregation laws unconstitutional.

Now home to the Equal Justice Initiative and its renowned Legacy Sites, Montgomery is now an international tourist destination, uniquely positioned on the Alabama River.
